Brake Pads vs. Brake Shoes: Which is Better?

In vehicle braking systems both brake pads and brake shoes are very crucial for determining which is better suited for specific applications. Both components ensure safe and effective braking but operate differently.  These components are suitable for distinct types of vehicles and driving conditions.

 

Brake Pads

 

Design and Functionality:

  • Brake pads are required in disc brake systems of driving.

  • Friction material bonded to a steel backing plate.

  • When the brake pedal is pressed, the brake calliper squeezes the brake pads against the brake rotor

 Advantages:

  • Brake pads provide superior stopping power especially in high-speed situations, making them ideal for modern as well as sports cars.

  • It allows for better heat dissipation, reducing the risk of brake fade in the condition of heavy braking.

  • They are easier to inspect and replace.

Disadvantages:

  • Brake pads are generally more expensive.

  • It is faster due to the higher friction.

Brake Shoes

 

Design and Functionality of brake shoes:

Brake shoes are employed in drum brake systems generally in the rear wheel.
They are made of metal with friction material. When the brake pedal is pressed, the brake shoes are pushed outward against the inner surface of the drum which slows down or stops the vehicle.

Advantages:

  • Brake shoes have a longer lifespan because the friction is spread over a larger surface area.

  • They are usually cheaper and less susceptible than brake pads in terms of parts and replacement costs.

  • They are more effective in holding applications like parking brakes or vehicles that require strong holding power.

Disadvantages:

  • They have poorer heat dissipation compared to disc brakes, which can cause brake fade.

  • Brake shoes are more inspected, due to their enclosed design.

Which is Better?

The choice between brake pads and brake shoes depends on the specific needs and design of the vehicle:

 Modern Passenger Cars: Brake pads are suitable for modern passenger cars ensuring prioritizing performance and safety. Their superior stopping power, better heat dissipation, and ease of maintenance make them appropriate for vehicles with high-speed conditions.

  • Trucks and Heavy Vehicles: Brake shoes are well-suited for vehicles such as trucks and trailers, which hold strong power and durability. They are more durable and cost-effective for the heavier loads.

  • Special Applications: In vehicles with a combination of both disc and drum brakes, each type serves its particular purpose effectively, balancing cost, and performance.
